A difficult denarius to track down
Vespasian (69-79) AR denarius, issued 76. Rome, 3.39g, 18mm. Obv: IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG; laureate head r. Rev: PON MAX TR P COS VII; Pax seated l., holding olive branch RIC II 852; BMC 184 *; RSC 373 From the Limes collection
AMCC #3 Lot 197 July 25, 2021
RIC (2007) lists this coin as common. It is not common at all. I have been looking for one of these for the last several years. The COS VI version of this coin is one of the most common denarii of Vespasian. If I don't see more than several a day when shopping for coins I am surprised. This one is easy to overlook and sometimes they are misattributed as the more common COS VI.
I am very happy with the portrait and I love having the full obverse legend. It is also very helpful that COS VII is very clear on the reverse. This is not always the case on this type.
I am very happy to finally add one of these to my collection.
